October 2011 Newsletter
Minister’s Message: As I quickly move from the newcomer to one who knows your names, one who is part of the very fabric of the Trinity congregation, I am thrilled to be in touch with you in this way.
On my first Sunday in August there was a warm welcome for my family as Trinity and St. Mark’s jointly hosted a lovely welcome barbeque: setting a tone of renewed cooperation.
It is a blessing to be in ministry with the Trinity congregation even at this time when the past is fresh and the future uncertain. There is a spirit of hope stirring through our worship and through the many conversations I have been blessed to have with so many of you. As we grow into an unknown future I will be inviting conversation with each one of you: seeking to hear how God is moving in your life and where you feel our congregation is called to be.
In this newsletter you will find much information about the congregation and our involvement in the broader church. You will find updates on what has been happening and what is coming up. Beth Hayward
Joint Coffee with St. Mark’s
We have been gathering with St. Mark’s to share a time of coffee and conversation between our two worship services on Sunday mornings. This successful experiment will continue on the last Sunday of each month.
Transition Team
Beth Hayward began her ministry with Trinity on August 1st. Beth is with us as a Supply Minister with a two year contract. During this time she will provide leadership in all of the usual ways a minister does: Sunday worship, pastoral care, weddings and funerals etc. She will also provide intentional leadership to assist Trinity in deciding future directions. Her work with us is guided by the goals set out by the Transition Team:
• To lead the congregation in a process of healing and “moving on”
• To make contact with everyone who is on the Trinity roll.
• To facilitate leadership and participation of the congregation to aid in necessary decision making.
• To facilitate the congregation in determining its future – whether it be revitalization at the present site, a move, amalgamation or disbanding.
• To maintain basic activities such as Sunday worship leadership, pastoral care, Bible Study.
The Transition team met on October 3rd. At this meeting the group directed Beth to continue to work toward visiting and gathering feedback from every member of the congregation. Members of the Transition Team will come to the next meeting prepared to share ideas about future direction for the congregation. You are invited to seek out members of the Transition Team to offer your thoughts and ideas.
The Transition Team includes: Corrine Durston, Beth Hayward, Doug Jameson, Lyall Simpson, Beverley Tamboline and Ariel Creighton and Sheila Stanway representing Vancouver Burrard Presbytery.
Child Care
Spread the word!!! Trinity offers child care and age-appropriate faith formation activities every week. This decision was made at the September Council meeting. Jade Martin Seedhouse provides this service in support of our ministry.
St. James Community Square
In 1992, Trinity United Church was created when St. James and Kitsilano United amalgamated. At that time, a group of Kitsilano citizens approached the congregation about using the building at 10th and Trutch as a community space for educational, cultural and recreational programs.
The St. James Community Square Society was formed and a lease was created between the Society and the Trinity Trustees. The building has been maintained through grants and donations. Trinity is responsible for the envelope of the building, for example, replacing or repairing the roof. In return for the building use, we receive a monthly donation which funds Trinity’s expenses like salaries and our joint share of running St. Mark’s/Trinity.
While benefiting from the monies received we also have a responsibility to use the asset in the best way possible for the church as a whole. We have representatives that sit on the St. James Community Square Board to oversee the best use of this legacy.
And as a result we passed the following motion recently that:
Motion: That Trinity United Church requests approval from Vancouver Burrard Presbytery to spend $66,000 (inclusive of the $28,000 previously approved) on repairs to St. James Community Square. These funds will be taken from the Trinity United Church Manse Fund. Motion adopted at August 21st congregational meeting about St. James repairs.
