Campaign for Secure Dwelling

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) is a ministry of active peacemaking sponsored by Mennonites, Brethren, and Friends Meetings. Since 1995 the Christian Peacemaker Team in Hebron, in the West Bank, has worked to reduce violence through patrolling streets, responding to news of trouble, and staying with people in tense times and places. They also support Israeli and Palestinian peacemakers in their work They believe there can be no security of Israelis or Palestinians while the Israeli military occupies the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In 1997, CPT-Hebron founded the Campaign for Secure Dwellings (CSD), which links congregations in North America with West Bank Palestinian families and neighborhoods. CSD works with the Palestinian Land Defense Committee, Rabbis for Human Rights, and the Israeli Committee Against Home Demotions.
In 1998 Trinity United became the 7th congregation in North America to affiliate with CSD, (there are now nearly 100 partnerships). As a partner we are committed to bringing our concerns for a just peace in Israel/Palestine through worship, public witness and political appeal.

AS CSD Partners, we are committed to doing three things:
  1. Contact Canadian or Israeli officials in response to Urgent Action appeals about imminent house demotions. These appeals have had surprising success.

  2. Bring our concern for a just peace in Israel/Palestine into our worship several times a year. Besides participating through litanies, readings, and music in our services, our congregation hasheard sermons from Anita Fast, a VST graduate on the Hebron team.

  3. Hold a public forum or witness at least once a year. Trinity people helped organize and carry out a February 2001 Canadian speaking tour by Jeff Halper of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition (ICAHD) and Salim Shawamreh, a Palestinian whose house ICAHD has rebuilt three times.
